Purpose

Provides funding for loan repayment for pediatric medical subspecialty care, pediatric surgical specialty care, and child and adolescent behavioral healthcare providers in exchange for service commitments at approved sites in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) or Medically Underserved Areas/Populations (MUA/Ps). Aims to increase access to pediatric care, including mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) prevention and treatment services, in underserved areas.

Eligible pediatric medical subspecialty care, pediatric surgical specialty care, and child and adolescent behavioral healthcare professions include:

  • Physicians (MD or DO)
  • Psychologists
  • Licensed clinical social workers (LCSW)
  • Licensed or certified master's level social workers (LCMSW)
  • Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PNS)
  • Marriage and family therapists (MFT)
  • Licensed professional counselors (LPC)
  • SUD counselors

Amount of Funding

A maximum of $100,000 for an initial 3 years of full-time clinical practice for providers serving at an approved site serving a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), Medically Underserved Area (MUA), or Medically Underserved Population (MUP).

Who Can Apply

Applicants must work in a pediatric medical subspecialty care, pediatric surgical specialty care, and child and adolescent behavioral healthcare approved discipline and specialty to be eligible for this program and meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, born or naturalized, or a U.S. national, or permanent resident with a a non-conditional Permanent Resident Card
  • Have a current, full, permanent, unencumbered, unrestricted health professional license, certificate or registration in the discipline in which the individual is applying to serve
  • Be employed, have accepted a position, or entered an accredited residency or fellowship program at an approved site where employment and provision of care to patients will begin no later than July 9, 2024
  • Submit a complete application

Funding priority will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • Work or will work in a school or other pre-kindergarten, elementary, or secondary education setting
  • Have familiarity with evidence-based methods including culturally and linguistically competent healthcare
  • Demonstrate financial need by the way of debt-to-income ratio
