Purpose
Supports school food programs by making grants to state educational agencies (SEAs), which award competitive sub-grants to schools and local educational agencies (LEAs) for the purchase of food service equipment. Awards subgrants through SEAs to schools and districts participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and supports the purchase of equipment with a value at or above $1,000. Aims to provide students with healthier meals, improve food safety, and help establish, maintain, or expand a school breakfast program.
SEAs may consider several selection criteria for a grant, including but not limited to:
- Age of food service equipment or lack of appropriate equipment
- Ability of proposed equipment to increase efficiency in procurement, food storage, and distribution/service for school food programs
- Availability of existing state and local funding for food service equipment
- Strategies to make school lunchrooms more convenient and appealing to students
- Opportunities to have a meaningful effect on nutrition and quality of meals
