Purpose

Awards competitive scholarships for students pursuing eligible primary care health professional training leading to the following degrees:

  • Medicine (MD or DO)
  • Dentistry (DDS or DMD)
  • A postgraduate degree or postgraduate certificate from a school or program in nurse-midwifery education, physician assistant education, or nurse practitioner education specializing in adult medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, pediatrics, psychiatric-mental health, or women's health

Scholarships are awarded to students in exchange for a full-time service commitment at a National Health Service Corps (NHSC)-approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) for a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 4 years.

Amount of Funding

Provides scholarship support to pay for tuition and eligible fees, other reasonable educational expenses, and a monthly stipend in exchange for a minimum of 2 years of full-time service at an NHSC-approved site, up to a maximum of 4 years.

Who Can Apply

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. born or naturalized, or U.S. national
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student beginning classes no later than September 30, 2024
  • Be attending or accepted to attend 1 of the following accredited schools or programs in 1 of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory:
    • Medical student
    • Dental student
    • Nurse practitioner student
    • Nurse midwife student
    • Physician assistant student
  • Be eligible for federal employment
  • Not have an existing service obligation
  • Submit a complete application

To be qualified, eligible applicants must also meet additional selection factors that include:

  • Demonstrating a history of honoring prior legal obligations, which includes a credit check as part of the application review process
  • The ability to excel and maintain good academic performance
  • A commitment to a career in primary care and working in underserved communities, which is evaluated through essay questions and recommendation letters
  • Not being currently excluded, debarred, suspended, or disqualified by a federal agency

NHSC will follow the funding priorities outlined below for eligible, qualified applicants when making scholarship awards:

  • Current or former NHSC scholarship recipients who are seeking, and are eligible for, additional support for the 2024-2025 school year or through their date of graduation
  • Applicants who have characteristics that indicate a likelihood they will remain in a HPSA
  • Applicants who come from a disadvantaged background
